What are the real figures for COVID-19?

2021-10-13

“Brazil has registered more than 600,000 deaths due to COVID-19, the Health Ministry said on Friday, making it the second country in the world to pass that milestone after the United States.”

This news item has appeared in most international media today, on October 10, 2021. The major news agencies Reuters and AP who normally are competitors have joined forces to distribute these figures.

600.000 deaths! That is really terrifying.

According to an investigation made by US Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) only about six percent of all deaths registered as COVID-19 have been caused directly by the virus infection itself.

This is how the news agencies could have presented the numbers:

600,000 of the people who have died in Brazil since the pandemic began have either tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus or were suspected of being infected with SARS-CoV-2.

In 36,000 of these deaths, it can be suspected that infection with SARS-CoV-2 has been the leading cause of death, while the leading causes of death in the other 564,000 cases have been one or more acute or chronic diseases.
